BLINK Temporary Public Art Opportunities
Artists: Brenda Baker and Bird Ross
Brenda Baker and Bird Ross created a project called Pedestrian Art for Democracy through the BLINK Grant program. The artists created large stencils from their own designs and then used water-based chalk to place their images on the sidewalks and bike paths of Madison.
Literally, the images creatively encouraged the residents of Madison to vote in the coming presidential election. Additionally, however, the project also explored the relationship between art and democracy. In their proposal Baker and Ross stated that “a strong and healthy democracy and artistic freedom are intrinsically tied together. Our project, Pedestrian Art for Democracy, centers around the notion that in order for the arts to be strong and thriving, our democracy needs to be strong and thriving.”
