The Madison Arts Commission decided to improve the aesthetic quality of the intersection of Broadway and Bridge Roads. Artist Stephen Fischer was selected from a pool of applicants to create an original public art piece to be permanently installed on the north corner of this intersection. Fischer created a few designs that were presented to the community at a public meeting for comments. Madison Gateway was selected and later installed in the spring of 2004.
