As part of the renovation of State Street, the Philosophers' Grove was created to add value to busy downtown Madison. The array of stones is visually intriguing and offers respite to commuters and visitors in a unique way. The Philosophers' Grove consists of 44 stones, created from bronze and granite. There are 34 granite stones and 10 hollow bronze stones of varying diameters and heights. The angle and texture of each stone adds to the artistic nature of the Philosophers' Grove. The Philosophers' Stones create the physical gathering place that will bring people together. The text, designs, and artwork should then serve to promote thought and reflection within the gathering place.
Jill Sebastian is a public artist located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jill worked on the State Street Redesign Team with MSA engineers as the lead.
