Underflow (installed 2005)

Artist: Gail Simpson
Title: Underflow
Media: Steel, Rocks, Concrete, Decorative Materials
Location: Madison Water Utility

Simpson has created a stainless steel upright cone divided into three offset sections, plus six granite boulders set into the middle two tiers of the fountain in front of the Water Utility Building.

"This sculpture was inspired by the idea of water moving underground. Two aquifers run under the Madison area so I interrupted the cone twice: the offset sections are based on the refraction of light that causes a pencil in a glass of water to appear broken."

- Gail Simpson

Gail Simpson is a partner in the local company, Actual Size Artwork, with Aris Georgiades. They are professional artists who have collaborated on commissioned public art works since 1992. They are particulary interested in projects where there is an opportunity to integrate their work within a community. Both are professors in the UW-Madison Arts Department.
