PUBLIC ART

Frances Plaza Water Feature

The proposals are in for a site-specific water feature at Frances Plaza as part of the State Street Design Project. The selection and commission process is well underway and will move to the State Street Oversight Committee in the coming weeks. After Common Council finalizes the decision we’ll start working with the artist or artist team who will create the next major piece of public art for our City. During the State Street Redesign Project, Frances Plaza was designated as a "special place" along State Street, the dynamic pedestrian/bus transit mall that joins the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the State Capitol, businesses and residential areas. This project provides an opportunity for an artist, design team, or company to create a site-specific water feature that affirms the character of Madison and celebrates Madison's famed State Street. The Commission chose semi-finalists with the following experience and interest:

  1. Design and installation of outdoor art water features in extreme freeze/thaw conditions;
  2. Working in a collaborative effort with project design teams and engineers;
  3. Creating an aesthetically pleasing work that supports the goals and design elements of the State Street Design Project; and
  4. Artwork that minimizes operational/maintenance costs and energy needs.
