| Neighborhood Description: | Prairie Hills is an established neighborhood with a variety of housing - duplexes, apartments, and single family homes. Prairie Hills is blessed with recreational amenities, with two large parks - Lucy Lincoln Heistand and Pilgrim Park; and borders Elver Park, providing both summer and winter recreational opportunities. Prairie Hills is close to shopping, lying just south of West Towne Mall. Bike paths provide access to downtown Madison, Verona, and southern Wisconsin. The Prairie Hills Neighborhood Association (PHNA) works to improve the quality of life through communication within the neighborhood and between Prairie Hills and city and county governments. |

| Neighborhood Statistics Indicators: | The Neighborhood Indicators Project is a demonstration of key characteristics and various indicators that relate to the quality of life in Madison at the neighborhood level. Basic neighborhood information as well as housing, public safety, health and family well-being, economic, and transportation indicators by neighborhood is available. |
| Recent Accomplishments: | - Sponsored a School Board candidates forum, 2012. - Organized a Pride Day for park and greenway clean-up, Spring 2012 - Hosted a presentation on different cultures living in the neighborhood. - Works with the Hammersley Leaders Group to provide summer activities for neighborhood youth - Hosts bi-monthly informational meetings on areas of interest to residents. - Has community garden in Lucy Lincoln Heistand Park. - Provides resources information to neighborhood residents. - Works with other associations on neighborhood events, such as suppers, marches, celebrations. -Sponsored a community-wide event, United We Stand, on August 29, 2009 to bring neighbors, area school principals/teachers, and police officers together for a meet-and-greet and planned youth activities for neighborhood children to get to know one another The event was held at Elver Park with a great turnout (2009). -Start-up of Hammersley Children’s Garden at Falk Elementary School. PHMDC, Early Childhood Initiatives, REAP Food Group, Falk School, CAC and neighborhood residents worked to open this newest garden focusing on children learning about gardening and harvesting healthy foods. Falk Elementary School teachers will be using the garden in part of their school curriculum (June 2009). -A Hammersley Block Party was organized to celebrate the opening of Hammersley Community Garden at Falk School. Over 150 area residents came to the event organized by PHMDC, in collaboration with the neighborhood police officer, CAC, Wisconsin Youth Company, and ECI (2009). -SWAN (Southwest Alliance of Neighborhoods), a coalition of neighborhoods on the southwest side of Madison, have recently formed a neighborhood-based organizations to share information and to work together on activities/projects. One of their first efforts is to design a social contract, Residents Bill of Rights, to set neighborhood standards (2009). -Prairie Hills Neighborhood Association coordinates a Quarterly Safety Meeting with the Madison Police Department West District to identify neighborhood issues, discuss solutions and provide updates of neighborhood and police initiatives (2009). -In a City of Madison/Madison Schools partnership, the new Meadowood Community Center opened near the corner of South Whitney Way and Raymond Road, in the Meadowood Shopping Center (adjacent to the library). Recreation and academic enrichment programs provided by Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR) serve neighbors young and old (2009). http://www.mscr.org/MSCR-MeadowoodCenter.cfm -Neighborhood residents, business representatives, and other stakeholders within in the neighborhood worked together to prepare the Southwest Neighborhood Plan (adopted January 2008). -Start-up of Prairie Hills Community Gardens located in the Lucy-Lincoln Heistand Park (2008). -Received a City of Madison Neighborhood Planning Grant to host a Ice Cream Social. At the event, neighborhood residents were interviewed on neighborhood issues and how they would like to become involved in the neighborhood associaiton (2006). -Drafted and adopted permanent bylaws, which established four distinct areas within the neighborhood boundaries, each of which is to be served by an Area Representatives. Block captains will complete the representation process, giving voice to all in the community. -The neighborhood board continues to work on ways to get neighbors to know each other. Several blocks held block parties over the summer, and we are encouraging more blocks to do the same. Neighborhood events, such as the 4th of July parade, the Halloween bonfire, and trash clean-ups, are also good opportunities for people to meet and socialize. -Thanks to a City of Madison Neighborhood Grant, we were able to print resident resource fliers which are being used as recruitment tools. We’re looking forward to an active and productive year. |
