The Weimar period in Germany between the two world wars was a dynamic time for the arts. If you’ve seen the musical Cabaret, then you have an idea of the heady atmosphere in the nightclubs and theaters of that era. Max Raabe and his orchestra capture the cosmopolitan feel of German cabaret in the ‘20s and ‘30s with precision, urgency and irony. Raabe, a baritone with an impressive vocal range, sparkles with his slick and witty delivery, and his 12-piece ensemble provides just the right backdrop. “In the grand style of performers from Germany’s Weimar Republic, Max Raabe and his Palast Orchestra like to party like it’s 1929,” writes the New York Times.
