Energy Conservation Project at City of Madison Facilities
The City saves energy to save both the environment and money at the same time. Little measures add up and are difficult to track. But the larger measures we take add up even more, actually a lot more: annual savings of 807,825 kWh, 53,370 therms and 926 tons of CO2.
Since 2007, the City has installed 11 solar hot water systems on all the fire stations. In addition 4 solar electric systems have been installed on the Engineering Service Building, the Alicia Ashman Library, Demetral Landfill and Greentree Landfill. In total, the City will save 30,648 kWh and 3,426 therms every year. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43 tons annually. The systems perform extremely well and demonstrate the viability of solar energy in Wisconsin. Most systems have energy monitoring and some are accessible via the internet. In 2009, the City will install 4 more PV systems with 10 kW each.
The city has retrofitted many facilities with modern lighting technology. Highest efficiency fluorescent lighting, LED and induction lighting make sure high quality light is delivered at the lowest possible power consumption. Modern lighting controls make sure the lights are only on when needed. Lighting has been modernized at two parking ramps, the Engineering Service Building, the East and West Streets Maintenance Facility and several fire stations. In total, the City will save 501,616 kWh every year. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 399 tons annually. Another benefit of new lighting is better lighting quality, for added security and comfort, and less maintenance. In 2009, the City will retrofit lighting in at least five more large facilities.
Adding insulation and air sealing the building keeps the heat inside in winter and the heat outside in summer. Insulation was added to the Traffic Engineering Operations Center and the East and West Streets Maintenance Facility. Two fire stations have been air sealed and partially insulated. In total, the City will save 5,952 kWh and 39,141 therms every year. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 212 tons annually. In 2009, the City will add insulation to and air-seal 5 more buildings.
While typical water heaters have efficiencies of less than 60% and won’t last long in commercial applications, the city uses high efficiency (96%) water heaters that are built to last. Recent installations include five fire stations and the East Streets Maintenance Facility. In total, the City will save 5,568 therms every year. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 tons annually. In addition, repair and replacement cost is reduced significantly.
HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning):
Inefficient buildings typically have inefficient HVAC systems. Therefore the buildings with the highest energy usage will be upgraded. Currently, the North Police Station is being upgraded and in 2008 the boiler at the East Streets Maintenance Facility was replaced. In addition, the City is installing destratifying fans in the Engineering Service Maintenance Facility vehicle storage. Those fans will reduce heating cost and improve comfort. The city will save 36,614 kWh and 10,128 therms every year. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 81 tons annually.
