What is a Solar ENERGY System?

There are two types of solar energy systems. Solar electric (also called photovoltaic or PV) systems use sunlight to produce electricity. Solar water heating systems heat water for domestic use or space heating.

Solar Electric Systems

  • In most cases, the solar electric system is connected to your utility grid.
  • When the system produces more electricity than you use, and you have a “net-metering agreement” with your utility, you send extra electricity back to the grid and receive credit on your bill. When the system produces less electricity than you use, you buy electricity from the utility.
  • With this kind of “grid-tied” system, an optional battery bank can provide backup or uninterruptable power in case of power outage.

Solar Water Heating

  • In most cases potable water is heated for bathroom, kitchen and laundry use. You can also heat swimming pools and hot tubs.
  • Solar hot water systems can support space heating too.
