Biotechnology Industry

Madison, Wisconsin is the predominant urban center in south central Wisconsin, providing a livable, innovative, vibrant, and stable economy anchored by the University of Wisconsin, State government, and a strong and diversified private employment base. We have a low unemployment rate and dynamic private sector marked by fast growing trade, service and hi-tech industry sectors. In 2008, around 500 hi-tech businesses call Greater Madison home, employing 29,000 people and administering $6 billion in sales and/or government contracts (MG& E High-Tech Directory ). Come see why both Microsoft and Google opened new R&D and product development facilities in Madison in 2008!

In the last 20 years, biotechnology entrepreneurs and scientists have discovered why Madison is known as the Midwest’s ”hotbed of biocapitalism.” In September 2008, the global stem cell community will descend upon Madison and continue this trend for the Genetics Policy Institute’s World Stem Cell Summit. This global stem cell community, lead by partners WiCell and the UW Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center, share the mission to advance stem cell research from laboratory to lifesaving treatments.
