Absentee Voting in Clerk's Office

Cast an absentee ballot in the City Clerk's Office. 
Voters are now required to show ID before being issued a ballot.  Please note that the address on your ID doesn't matter for proving your identity.  Be prepared to show the City Clerk’s Office one of the following types of ID:

  • Wisconsin driver license with an expiration date after the date of the last November election (11/8/2016)
  • WI DOT-issued photo ID card with an expiration date after the date of the last November election (11/8/2016)
  • U.S. passport with an expiration date after the date of the last November election (11/8/2016)
  • Military ID card with an expiration after the date of the last November election (11/8/2016)
  • Certificate of naturalization issued within last 2 years
  • Unexpired Wisconsin driver license or state ID receipt
  • ID card issued by a federally recognized Indian tribe in Wisconsin
  • ID issued by a Wisconsin accredited university or college—must contain issuance date, student signature, and expiration date within 2 years of issuance, along with proof of current enrollment.

If you're not already registered to vote at your current address, you may register at the City Clerk’s Office.  When registering to vote, you will need to show the City Clerk's Office one document (either paper or electronic) with your current name at your current address.  The following types of documents are acceptable under state law for proving your address when registering to vote:

  • Wisconsin driver license or Wisconsin state ID card
  • Utility bill from last 90 days (water, gas, electric, cable, internet, landline, or cellular phone)
  • Bank or credit union statement
  • Document or check issued by a unit of government (for example, City of Madison, Dane County, State of Wisconsin, Social Security Administration, Madison Metropolitan School District, Madison Area Technical College, or the University of Wisconsin)
  • Paycheck
  • Residential lease
  • Private college fee statement from the last nine months, accompanied by a student ID card
