The Near West is a mixed-use area of established residential neighborhoods and commercial areas, University campus and adjacent student housing and business areas, and the City’s only urban renewal project. CDBG program-funded activities have traditionally included either operating or capital support for the two neighborhood centers near the renewal area, or housing rehab activities through the City’s CED Rehab Loan or Project Home’s repair programs. In the last three years, the program assisted eligible families into ownership in the Mills-Mound Co-Housing project and a Madison Area CLT-assisted project. A concentration neighborhood planning process in the early 1990’s led to a series of physical improvement projects designed to increase the accessibility of Brittingham Park and Lake Monona Bay to the area’s disabled population.
Two major site-specific projects within this area over the last decade have involved major affordable housing projects, such as Independent Living’s acquisition of its Segoe Road complex and Community Housing and Services’ expansion of its SRO to 102 units.
The major 2003 activities in this area will include continued support of the CHAS transitional housing and counseling program and continued support of the Neighborhood House Neighborhood Center. A portion of this area is scheduled to participate in the South Madison/Bay Creek concentration neighborhood process, which will result in the identification of several higher priority capital projects for implementation in 2003.
The Near West area is also served by our community-wide core/basic activities, which are available to residents in all areas of the City of Madison.
