Mid Season Update

The friendly rivalry between Ald. Julia Kerr and I heats up as we head into the second half of the baseball season. Regular Dave Blog readers may recall that Kerr, an unrepentant (but plenty penanted) Boston Red Sox fan, challenged me to a bet over whether her Sox or my Milwaukee Brewers would have the most victories at the end of the season. (It's not clear whether Julia will allow me to count the Brewers' four wins in the World Series but we'll worry about that later.)
To bait me further Kerr offered to add the Madison Mallards wins to the Brewers total, so confident was she of the outcome. The stakes are high. Julia has put up New England seafood, and I'm on the hook for home grown Wisconsin products. (I'm not sure if Julia wants her cheese curds fried or not.)
Well, guess what. The Sox had 54 wins before the All Star Break while the Brewers had 45 and our own Mallards had 8, leaving the Alder only one game ahead. (Never mind that back in April I suggested changing the bet to include only the Mallards wins on Tuesdays, which would leave me six games behind. I didn't know what I was saying and I'm ruling my motion at that time out of order.)
Baseball fans are nothing if not optimistic. If the rest of the Brewers lineup can get more consistent at the plate to match the heroics of All Stars Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun and if the pitching staff can regain some of their early season form and if the Mallards can stay on top of the Northwoods League Southern Division, I think the forces of truth and justice might just have a chance here. I'll check in later on in the season, possibly to ask for lobster recipes.
