Last night's tragic homicides in Dane County are hard for any of us to get our minds around. Of course, we need to support all the law enforcement agencies that are hard at work finding the person who committed these crimes and bringing him to justice. And I share the grief of the friends and relatives of the victims. The killing of two young mothers and their two young children is especially hard to comprehend.
What seems to be true is that this tragedy has its roots in domestic violence. Hard economic times may be fueling increased incidents of domestic violence and, while most don't result in tragedies of this degree, they are all horrendous and they are all wrong. As policy makers we can't find the killers or solve the crimes, but we should be cognizant of the deeper societal issues that might be behind the tragedy.
