You Can't Take the Cross Town Bus

"At the Zoo" is a great old Simon & Garfunkel song. One lyric goes, "But you can take the cross town bus if it's rainin' or it's cold."
Now you can't take that bus through Central Park if it's late at night. Check out this story from last week's New York Times:
New York is a great city with what is still a really fine public transportation system, but like many transit services in the country, hard economic times have forced New York to cut bus service.
Not so here in Madison. A year ago we were fighting for the first general fare increase in a decade. It was a tough battle, but it was some pain with a lot of gain. Last August we increased service more than we have in a decade. And we also added security, created a very successful low income pass program, and initiated a new program that will help small businesses access free or reduced bus passes for their employees just like bigger companies have been able to do for years.
So if you're a hard working Madisonian, you now have access to more service and if you're income qualified or an employee of a company participating in the workforce fare program, reduced fares. The more we see from other cities, the more our hard fought fare increase looks like the right decision.
