Sticking Up For Madison

This week's Isthmus contains a brilliantly written defense of our city. You can read it at http://isthmus.com/r/?r=ba5.
Madison has a lot going for it and not all of it is of our own making. After all, it was the state legislature that put the Capitol and the UW here 160 years ago. (Now some of their legislative descendants make careers out of bashing those decisions.) And, powers even higher than that placed us among the Yahara chain of lakes making us the only city in North America built on an isthmus.
But I think it's fair to say that we've taken those advantages and made the most of them. Madison has been a laboratory for liberal policies and with rare exceptions, those policies work phenomenally well. We're not perfect, and the spirit of this place is to admit our mistakes, learn from them and improve. I wouldn't want to live (or be mayor of) anyplace else.
