This Saturday was the 15th Annual Men Who Cook fundraiser to benefit the scholarship fund of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Twenty-seven "chefs" competed this year. I entered my chocolate cookies, which have a delicate taste that is not too sweet and contrasted nicely with a light dusting of sea salt. (There was a lot of irresponsible loose talk and unfounded accusations about my wife's involvement in the cookie production, much of which was exaggerated and doesn't deserve a reply here.) This was my third year of competition and once again I was shut out of the awards both by the judges and in the people's choice voting. On the other hand, Chief Noble Wray, in his very first year of competition, won prizes in both categories for his beef pot pie. Also, Madison police officer Carlos Valetin, a perennial winner for his flan, won again. And J.R. Sims, the significant other of my own chief of staff, also got an award in his first competition. Congratulations to them all. I will not be openly bitter.
