Redistricting in the City of Madison is the process of redrawing the City's wards and aldermanic districts. These boundaries are adjusted based on population changes that have occurred over the last decade. Through redistricting, the population within each aldermanic district is equalized so that residents across the City have equal representation on the Common Council. A similar process is done at the county (Supervisors), state (Representatives and Senators) and federal (Representatives) levels.

The City's Ad Hoc Reapportionment and Redistricting Committee led the City's redistricting process. The Committee was comprised of four Alders and three citizen members. Using 2010 Census data and other information that describes our community, the Committee crafted a plan for new wards, aldermanic districts and polling places. The Common Council reviewed the plan and ultimately adopted the final plan on September 6, 2011. The new wards and aldermanic districts will be used for the next decade.
