SNOW EMERGENCY ALERT

Snow Plowing Updates

Ding! Round two! With more snow charging toward Madison, the Streets Division has a plan in place to keep the streets safe for everyone.

Today (12/9), the Streets Division deployed our brining crews to the major thoroughfares of the city. Our brine is a simple saltwater solution that we spray onto the streets. When used on the streets prior to an event, the brine prevents snow from binding to the pavement. This allows us to scrape the snow clean from the streets and allows us to spread less salt later to keep the streets open. Not all of the city salt routes receive the pre-event brining treatment since Streets does not have the capacity to do so, but the most critical thoroughfares of city do receive it. Streets such as East Washington Ave., Northport Dr., Old Sauk Rd, and Mineral Point Rd. to name a few will all be brined during work hours today.

When the snows begin this weekend, we will deploy 32 crews to keep all of the city salt routes open. The salt routes are the major thoroughfares, Madison Metro bus routes, plus roads around schools and hospitals. Crews will also be applying sand hills, curves, and intersections to assist with traction. The roads will be continuously serviced for as long as conditions dictate.

Streets Division staff will monitor this storm closely. Some predictions are calling for up to 12 inches of snow, but predictions can be wrong. A decision on whether or not all city streets will be plowed will be made during the snow event. Residents are reminded that if a general plow or snow emergency is declared it is Streets Division policy not to begin plowing until the storm is at or near its end. However, our operations will adjust to the weather conditions as needed. Future updates will be sent as well.

Since predictions are calling for a heavy snow, all roadway users should be prepared for slower travel times this weekend. Please make good choices on the roads - give yourself extra time to get where you need to be and allow for extra braking distance.

PLEASE NOTE ALTERNATE SIDE STREET PARKING RESTRICTIONS ARE IN PLACE TO AVOID BEING TICKETED.

Be safe.
