The Common Council recently approved a resolution to explore the creation of a Municipal ID Card. This ID would be issued by the City of Madison with a primary focus of trying to reach populations that could benefit from having an ID, who for whatever reason do not currently have a government-issued ID. According to the research, there are several factors that support municipal ID's because it: is a simple and cost-effective way to make a meaningful difference in the daily lives of community members; it can be a powerful symbol of inclusion and welcoming towards marginalized community members; increases the ability for undocumented community members to report crimes without fear of retribution; allows for true and correct gender identity reflection for transgender community members; assists members of the homeless community to acquire a government issued ID; and a pathway for local governments to empower its citizens to address policies on a broader platform, with regard to immigrant rights, economic inequities, and racial justice.

In response to this resolution, Madison Public Library has been asked to seek information from the community on how a Municipal ID card could function for people in Madison.

We are beginning a conversation with agencies and organization throughout the city whose clientele may benefit from gaining access to this Municipal ID. We would like your input.
