Alder Harrington-McKinney’s Updates

Public Safety

August 16, 2018 10:33 PM

Alders receive daily reports from Police Chief Koval on police activity throughout the city. There is a continued increase in reported stolen cars.  There has been a consistent ask by police not to leave cars or garage doors unlocked continues  to rise across the city.

Stolen cars still a big problem:

The five year city-wide average for July robberies is 22.  With 37% of the  robberies taking plac between 9p-2am. Burglaries City:  119 burglaries in July compared to 79 burglaries in July of 2017, a 51% increase. The final data from the month of July is "Theft from Autos".There was a 21% increase in theft from autos from July, 2017 (156) to July, 2018 (188).  Through the end of July, our community has experienced a total of 605 reported theft from auto incidents.  When we look at the average (749) for this timeframe over the last four years, we see a small decrease (19% decrease).

Here is a breakdown, per district, of where these incidents occurred in July:

West: 42
Midtown: 35
South: 11
Central: 26
North: 32
East: 42

Remember....lock your vehicles (even when in a garage) and leave valuables out of sight (and even better, do not leave valuables - - especially guns - - in your vehicle at all)!  Do not become an easy target to become victimized!

West District Police Blog

Deeply disturbing involved a 16 year old attempting to disarm a police officer.  Why would a 16 year old be reckless enough to try to disarm an officer?  I am thankful that the outcome was not fatal.  Enough is enough. As a parent, you want to keep your child safe - did you asked yourself this same question? How could this happen?  I would like to hear from you.  Please email me: district1@cityofmadison.com or call the Common Council Office and leave me a message: 608.266.4071.
