Library Director, Mickells says "Thank You".

To:
MPL Staff,   I wanted to thank all of you again for the fantastic job everyone put forth to make early voting a reality at our libraries.  We haven't received final numbers yet but we do know that this year's early voting will probably set a record for the number of people voting in this way.  I have to add that it really isn't just about the numbers.  It is an excellent demonstration of library staff putting in that extra effort to assist in providing an equitable solution to early voting.  MPL was able to reduce and sometimes eliminate many of the barriers that some voters may have faced.  You should all be very proud that this goal was accomplished.  In addition, everywhere I travel I hear positive comments about the staff's engagement and enthusiasm in making this such a terrific voting experience.  It bought many people to our facilities who had not been in a library for a long time and they shared how different libraries appear now,  that they really do represent a tremendous value to the community.

I wanted to share this letter from this morning's (11-7-2016)  Wisconsin State Journal that really confirms your contributions to this election process.  Ms. Pils' message truly echoes many of the comments I have been receiving from the public.

Thank librarians for early voting:
We are all called to do our part as citizens in this very contentious, rancorous election.

So during the past month I have volunteered as a early voting poll worker for the city of Madison. There is a sense of patriotism as we sit there, checking wards and the right ballot for the school referendums, while voters fill out their absentee ballot envelopes and walk over to cast their ballots. Working at Edgewood College was the most fulfilling, as young adults cast their first ballots for president. Excitement was in the air, and yet the mood was somber as they deliberated in the polling booths. They knew the seriousness of this election.  Through all of the six weeks, when volunteers work two-, three- or six-hour shifts, the librarians of Madison have been working all day at two jobs -- the jobs that they are paid to do, and assisting with early voting. I want to extend a thank you to all the librarians in Madison for doing the mammoth job of working for all of us to enable early voting to run smoothly throughout the city. They are the real heroes of this election.
Linda Pils, Madison

It is also important to recognize that we could not have done this without the vision of the City Clerk's office to make this opportunity available to MPL.   The number of hours they spent in training and supporting our efforts was a tremendous assistance to our efforts.  It speaks to the importance of city agencies collaborating to achieve a common goal in supporting our community.

Thank you again for your dedication and hard work to make this such a success and for the many contributions that you make on a daily basis in delivering our services to the community.

Best,
Gregory P. Mickells
