Alder Harrington-McKinney’s Updates

Let's do the work together!

November 17, 2016 12:09 PM

Dear Neighbors:
I am interested in hosting a series of cafe conversations about post-election opportunities to discuss the growing racial divide in our communities. Conversations that may be at times uncomfortable, painful but healthy when facilitated with respectful ground rules. If anyone is interested in participating or hosting any of these cafe hosting sessions please contact me. The fear and discord is drifting into our schools and certainly within our community. The position of Alder is a non/partisan position. So, I'd like to offer a safe space to have these conversations. Please email me your thoughts. I understand these conversations are not for everyone, but for those of us wanting to understand each other and ourselves better, this invitation is to us.

CAP TIMES TALK
Last night I participated in a discussion panel at Madison's Central Library. (Again, if interested in holding such a forum please let me know.)

Racial inequities are at the forefront of the biggest civic discussions in Madison, and one frequently mentioned as a problem under that heading is the scarcity of leaders of color within major organizations. What can we do in Madison to foster more racially diverse leadership? The Cap Times, working with coworking space 100state,  created an event to examine that question. Reporter Amber Walker moderated the discussion panel.
Panelists were:
• Kaleem Caire, founder and CEO of Achieve64 and One City Early Learning Centers
• Ald. Barbara Harrington-McKinney, District 1
• Sagashus Levingston, founder of Infamous Mothers
• Israel Lopez, business attorney at Neider & Boucher and founder of Chins Up
• Mayra Medrano, president of the Latino Chamber of Commerce of Dane County

The discussion was followed by brainstorming in breakout sessions to generate action steps. It was very well attended.

POSTING FROM NEXT DOOR IN RESPONSE TO A RESIDENT:

(Name withheld), Thank you for your posting about the behaviors of kids in your neighborhood. I would like to meet with you to talk about this in more detail. Please contact me at district1@cityofmadison.com. I am at Yola's Cafe each Monday 7:30-noon. I have had neighbors stop by to talk about neighborhood concerns. This Monday I will be having coffee with a neighborhood police officer to talk about planning after school activities to address kids doing damage in another neighborhood. The president of a Home Owners Association plans to stop by to talk about some issues. Anyone is invited to join us in either an open table conversation or one-on-one if requested. It is an open forum as we try to come up with some possible solutions.
COFFEE AND CONVERSATIONS WILL CONTINUE MONDAY'S
7:30-noon
YOLA'S CAFE
