SNOW PLOWING ALERT

Snow Plowing Updates

The City of Madison is expecting our first significant snow event of the 2015-2016 winter. The Streets Division is monitoring the situation and we have a plan in place.

Prior to the snow falling, anti-icing operations will take place on our major streets. The anti-icing brine will prevent snow from bonding with the pavement and allow the Streets Division to use less salt when the snow does start.

Once the snow begins to fall, the Streets Division will send 32 crews out to service the city's salt routes. Salt routes are the main arterials, main connector streets, streets on Madison Metro routes and streets around schools and hospitals. We will continue to service the salt routes during the storm. We will also be applying sand to the hills, intersections, and curves on residential streets.

The Streets Division will monitor the snow accumulation totals to determine if a snow emergency is required. A snow emergency will not be declared unless the City receives three or more inches of snow on the roadways. Current pavement temperatures will melt the initial snow, meaning we will receive higher accumulation totals in the grassy areas than on the road. Note that residential streets will not be plowed until we have three or more inches of snow accumulated on roads, and only after the storm has ended, or nearing its end. Streets Division staff will continually monitor the situation and we will provide future updates.

The snow could cause problems during Friday evening and Saturday morning. There may be some slippery spots. Remember your winter driving tactics. Drive carefully and slowly. Brake early to give yourself time to stop. Generally, be alert and make good choices.
