Snow Plowing Updates
by Chris Kelley, Streets Superintendent
posted January 11, 2016 1:13 PM

Madisonians, it's cold outside. And that means the Streets Division cannot apply salt when servicing the roadways during tonight's snow event.

Plow and sand crews will be staying on through the evening rush hour and overnight. Salt is ineffective at temperatures below 15 degrees, so crews will be applying sand where needed to assist with traction.

Our crews we will be focusing on the 32 main routes, which incorporate the main arterials, main connector streets, Madison Metro Bus Routes and streets around schools and hospitals. We will also be sanding where needed on the hills, intersections, and curves of residential streets.

Streets Division staff will continuously monitor this event and will adjust operations as needed. Keep in mind that since salt will not be deployed until temperatures are above 15 degrees, slick spots may exist on the roadways. Drivers, and bicyclists, should make changes to their routine by planning for extra travel time and anticipating needing extra stopping distance. And they could be heroes for this one storm by being cautious and patient on the roadways in the coming days.
