Alders Matt Phair and Maurice Cheeks will be joined by their Council colleagues and several grass roots community leaders to respond to the recent gun violence in the city. They will outline a series of evidence-based violence prevention initiatives, and offer city budget recommendations that focus on youth violence prevention.

EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING CENTER for PEPR
The selection of the Urban League of Greater Madison (ULGM) as the operator of the Park Edge Park Ridge (PEPR) Neighborhood Employment Center planned at 1233 McKenna Rd. continues moving forward. The ULGM plans to begin outreach efforts with neighborhood residents and partner agencies in anticipation of the opening of the center. The resolution will go before the Board of Estimates and finally voted on at the June Council meeting.

This month, every home in Madison will be getting a postcard in the mail with important information about the city's drinking water. The cards announce the release of this year's Annual Water Quality Report, an overview of the tens of thousands of drinking water quality and safety tests Madison Water Utility conducted in 2015. Test results show the city's water once again met or exceeded all Federal and State standards for health and safety.

RE: Feedback about Refuse Collection - Illegal Dumping - West
The specific situation referenced below has been resolved, but it was brought to my attention from Alder McKinney that there were feelings that the city took no action regarding the items that were dumped outside your window on Waldorf.
Material that is set back on private property cannot be collected by our large item crews. Our crews can only pick up material that is down to the curb on the terrace or curbside. The best way to think about is if that if the item is on the street side of the sidewalk, then the Streets Division can collect it because that space is city right-of-way. If the item is on the home side of the sidewalk, then that is private property, and the Streets Division cannot collect it.
Building Inspection is the agency with the ability to enforce the codes and ordinances that involve dumping. At Streets, we're limited to the collection of the item, but Building Inspection can issue citations to get property owners to maintain their property. In this case, while it may not have been the property owners that placed the material there, they are the ones ultimately responsible for maintaining it, and Building Inspection is empowered to contact the owners to gain compliance. It was my hope at the time that the resolution to this would come shortly after contacting Building Inspection, and the material would be curbside by the next large item collection day. But from the emails you sent to Alder McKinney in February that I saw, it appears the resolution was not as swift as I had expected. The material was collected on a large item collection day for the neighborhood. Generally speaking, large items are picked up on the regularly scheduled large item day for the area because rarely do we have the availability to return to an area off schedule while also adequately serving the areas that are scheduled to receive their large item collection on a given day.
In the future, if this area continues to be a problem area with individuals dumping material, I recommend talking with both Building Inspection (266-4551) and even the Madison Police Department (west district is 243-0500). Illegal dumping is a crime that comes with a hefty fine if the people are caught. Perhaps there are strategies either department can provide that can help keep this lot clear, though it may take investment from the property owner of the lot. At the Streets Division, all we really can do is collect the material when it is curbside for proper disposal, which is why I recommend contacting BI & MPD about prevention techniques since all we can do is clean up after the problem has occurred.

Madison Parks pilot program to allow dogs on-leash in certain parks. James Madison Park in District 2 is part of the Dogs in Parks Pilot. Madison Common Council approved the Dogs in Parks Pilot Program expansion. Licensed and permitted dogs are now allowed, on-leash (6' or less), on path in the following additional parks:
Acewood, Baxter, Blackhawk, Door Creek, Garner, Greentree, High Point, James Madison, Norman Clayton, North Star, Richmond Hill, Walnut Grove and Wingra.
Park Rangers will increase patrol of these parks and citations can be given to those violating the new pilot program. Dog owners, be sure to ALWAYS clean up after your pets.
Please be sure to use the posted signs in the parks as the most current dog area information. Please remember that dogs are not allowed in any non-designated park, children's play areas, beaches, athletic fields, conservation parks, or in any park building. During the winter dogs are not permitted on groomed cross-ski trails.

SUMMER FREE MEAL SITES
A summer meal kickoff event will be held at Elver Park on Monday, June 20 at 11:30 am and is free and open to the public.
Madison joined by REAP Food group , Madison Metropolitan School District, Madison Parks, Public Health, Madison & Dane County and Midvale Baptist Church to improve and expand summer meal sites. This innovative partnership was formed to address food insecurity for children in Madison this summer. The MMSD Summer Food Program, which provides free summer meals to all children 18 and under at over 40 sites city wide, will begin on Monday, June 20. The expansion efforts will serve more children through the program by increasing public awareness and improving access to the free meals for both children and families. Special efforts will take place at three meal sites this summer. The summer meal partners are adding Elver Park as a new summer community meal site, serving free lunches June 20-Aug 12, from 12:00- 1:00pm to all children and to all adults who accompany children. Parks is a partner in providing the Elver shelter and services related to the facility space. Fun, educational, farm to school activities will take place daily at Elver Park starting at 11:30am. Team members from Midvale Baptist Church and REAP Food Group will serve lunches and lead activities.

Hiestand and Elver disc golf courses are open for the 2016 season!
Madison Parks offers two disc golf courses at Hiestand Park and Elver Park. The Disc Golf Courses are open to the public and require a permit for players age 16 and over.
Annual Pass: $40.00 (available after December 1 each year; valid for one calendar year)
Daily: $5.00 (availble at the course kiosk)
Free for kids age 15 and under
Replacement (Annual Pass): $12.00
WARNER PARK CONCERT SERIES -
Mark your calendar for Monday, June 13, and plan to join us when Northern Hooks kicks off our 2016 concert season. Five more Monday concerts will follow: June 20--Eddie Butts Band; June 27-- Ladies Must Swing; July 11--Thirsty Jones; July 18--Soggy Prairie Boys; and July 25--Cajun Strangers. All concerts begin at 6:00 p.m. at the shelter, and food is available for purchase each week.
