April's Alder Election

November 20, 2018 10:38 PM

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

After nearly fourteen years, two districts, seven elections, twenty-two committees, over 900 pieces of sponsored legislation, debates that were re-debated a number of times,  and countless votes, I have decided not to run for re-election this coming April.

Being your Alder has been a truly humbling experience. I want to thank all my volunteers, friends, neighbors, and colleagues who have supported and voted for me when running for Alder.

Working in a representative democracy has not always been easy, with neighbors expressing their opinion in a number of ways, but it is always rewarding. I am encouraged by the reemergence of neighborhood associations and encourage everyone to get involved with neighborhood associations or other local community groups to keep Madison moving forward.

I'm especially proud of the new Madison Public Library Central Library, the Royster-Clark redevelopment plan, the expansion of services for homeless individuals and affordable housing, improved bike path in Demetral Park and the recently approved plan to provide ADA compliant pads at all Metro bus stops in the next five years. I will continue to champion the Madison Public Market as a way to create a vibrant, engaging and economically sustaining community asset that will feature local foods and goods.

For the past ten years, I have served on the Capital Area Regional Planning Commission (CARPC), with the past several as the Chairperson. I have come to believe that our greater Madison region will only improve if we work collaboratively, engaging all members of the community to advance a common goal. Our challenges are just too large for one community, organization or governmental body to resolve.

I'm proud of our recent community engagement effort, A Greater Madison Vision (AGMV) which has garnered over 9,100 respondents about our future survey. AGMV will be using this information to create a vision for the region and push to further unite our communities to commit to resolving issues and concerns as one region.

This election marks an especially vital time for new voices to be included in city government. With many of my council colleagues and potentially the Mayor being new voices, District 12 will also be stronger with new individuals with different ideas, passions, backgrounds, and skills. While some might support the stability a few long-term "tent poles" can provide, I believe that sometimes true and enduring progress can be made in the chaos after a "what if..." question is asked.

I encourage those who would expand the diversity of the Common Council to run; especially Asian, Latinx, transgender, and people with disabilities to consider being the next representative for District 12. If you're not just ready to run for Alder, there are a number of vacancies on city committees that form the true work of our government and can provide amazing insight into how a complex city functions for the benefit of our residents, workers and visitors.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve the residents of District 15, District 12 and the City of Madison these past years.

Larry
