2018 Budget Update
Public hearing/comment on the 2018 Budget will be held on Monday, November 13, 2017. This is your opportunity to lend your support to the budget items that you care deeply about.
The 2018 Capital Budget has two moving parts; the first is the Capital Budget which focuses on infrastructure (roads, heavy equipment, and buildings). The City borrows money to fund this budget. The second is the Operating Budget which focuses on salaries for staff. This budget is funded by our taxes and fees. Together these budgets total $877 million dollars.
The City has 5 building projects in this budget cycle – Madison Municipal Building (former Federal Court House and also known as the MMB) is $30.2 million, Midtown Police Station located Mineral Point Road will cost approximately $9.8 million, the Public Market on eastside is estimated cost of $14 million and the new Fire Station #14 in the southeast section will cost approximately $6.8 million, Fleet Service relocation is estimated to cost $32.2 million; the Metro Satellite Facility will cost approximately $30 million.
In addition, the City's infrastructure continues to age, and our desire for new facilities continues to increase. The challenge for the Council is to find a balance between the wants and the necessities.
