Snow Olow Updates

December 23, 2016 2:09 PM

Snow Plowing Updates by Chris Kelley, Streets Superintendent posted December 23, 2016 9:44 AM For the fourth straight week, we're having a snowy weekend in Madison. But the Streets Division has no grievance to air about that - we're ready to keep these roads safe so it won't take a feat of strength to get you to your destination. Though you still need to be mindful of slippery patches during the day, especially during Friday's evening commute. A deployment of 32 crews was dispatched this morning to monitor our salt routes and to begin using salt when the snow begins to fall later this morning. Forecasts are calling the snow to last until late tonight, so crews will remain on the salt routes throughout the day, through the evening rush hour, and overnight. As a reminder, the salt routes are the major thoroughfares of Madison, Madison Metro bus routes, and roads around schools and hospitals. Forecasts vary about the depth of snow we will be receiving on Friday, so no determination has been made at this time if a citywide plowing or a snow emergency will be necessary. The Streets Division does not plow all the streets of Madison until there are three or more inches of snow on the roads and the storm is nearing its end. Staff will be monitoring conditions throughout this event, and future updates will be provided if circumstances require it. Staff is also carefully watching and considering the forecasts for freezing rain on Christmas Day. If the freezing rain does come, the Streets Division will be ready with crews out. However, freezing rain will result in icy, slippery conditions throughout Madison, especially on residential streets, intersections, and hilly areas. Therefore, if you must travel on Christmas, be very careful. If this event does arrive as predicted, the Streets Division will supply updates regarding our response to the storm. Please remember to make good choices on your commutes throughout Friday and over the weekend. Friday's snow will result in slippery patches, especially in residential areas and intersections. Please watch your speeds and give yourself plenty of braking distance so you can get home safe and enjoy this holiday weekend.
