New City Park is coming to District16!

New City Park for District 16 - Owl Creek!

For those of you who don't know Owl Creek is a residential neighborhood in District 16 sitting south of the belt line.

I have been an activity member of the  NRT (neighborhood resource team) for Owl Creek, since I was elected to office, in 2013.

To give you some background – Owl Creek is a development that did not survive the financial crisis.  This development has been in foreclosure and partially developed for years.

Mounds of dirt – trees growing out of a basement where no home was built – scattered homes.

Residents in Owl Creek where discouraged because of the blight of the area and neighboring developments were worried about falling home values.  In December of 2013, I sponsored a resolution to have City staff put together recommendations for the Owl Creek Development.  In last spring - City Staff's provided the  recommendation to purchase the 47 undeveloped lots in Owl Creek – they negotiated with the Bank holding the property and in November of 2014, not one year later the City purchased this property!  We are currently developing a RFP (request for proposal) for the development of this property.

So how does this story wrap around into a park?  There is already park land that abuts Owl Creek, it is filled with lovely trees and steep drop offs.  Parks received funds on the front end of this development to provide green space for the area.  These funds will finally be put to use in form of a neighborhood park.  Neighborhood residents, Parks staff and I will meet in February so they can start planning their park!  I am so excited for the residents – these are very big and important steps forward for this area of District 16.

I worked hard on making this happen – I am proud to be a part of this accomplishment and I am so happy for my constituents south of the beltline? !
