Fire Station 14

November 18, 2016 2:43 PM

And the Rest of the Story:

I want to make sure my constituents understand what is happening with the Fire Station for South East Madison.  The attached news segment did not fully capture all that you need to know.

Regrettably, I needed to move back money for the construction Fire Station 14 (located at Femrite and Dairy Dr.) to 2018 because the design and construction could not happen in 2017.  The time line to design a fire station and hiring a general contractor for construction takes an entire year.

The design process is scheduled to happen in 2017. There is $550,000 in the budget to be used to design the fire station.  The construction and funding $4,500.000 for the fire station is scheduled to occur in 2018.  The City's capital budget is a 5 year budget and the 2017 budget includes 2017-2021. Part of the language in the budget amendment specifies that the council is provided quarterly progress updates on the fire station design efforts throughout 2017, which was put in place to monitor and hold the Mayor and City Staff accountable for completing this necessary first step.

As you may know the Mayor has removed the fire station from his 5 year capital budget two years in a row.  I was able to have the fire station reinstated through budget amendments.   The Mayor has signed the 2017 budget which includes the schedule described above.  Given his past proposed budgets, which have consistently not included the fire station, I am concerned he will once again remove construction of the fire station for 2018 or delay it.  Rest assured if this happens I will fight hard to have the construction of the fire station put back into 2018.

I understand how important this basic public service is to my constituents.  I understand that response times for residents and businesses south of the beltline range 2-3 times as long as the rest of the City.  This is unacceptable.  I have listened to your stories of waiting for help as your baby isn't breathing, or your son is convulsing and help not arriving for 15+ minutes.

This fire station will primarily provide fire and emergency medical service for south east Madison, it will also serve as back up to fire stations 5(Cottage Grove Rd and Atas Ave.) and 6 (W Badger Rd).  This triangle of support will give much needed primary and secondary back up support to thousands of Madison residents.

I ask, and encourage, you to contact the Mayor's office to indicate your support for the Fire Station 14 and specify its design and construction in 2018 is an essential City service.

Thank you,

Denise DeMarb
