Snow plowing update - from Chris Kelley, Streets Superintendent

Snow Plowing Updates
by Chris Kelley, Streets Superintendent
posted December 18, 2016 12:42 PM
The snow emergency remains in effect as crews will be working to plow back areas that were blocked by parked cars during last night's plowing operation. This snow emergency will remain in effect until 7am, December 19. Many sections of the main thoroughfares of Madison remain snow covered due to the extreme cold temperatures that prevents the application of salt. Slippery patches will likely develop and will impact commuting throughout Sunday and Monday. All roadway users are encouraged to be cautious and make good choices. Please allow for extra travel time on your commutes, and leave plenty of space between yourself and the commuter in front of you when you brake.

The Streets Division has had crews applying sand to all roads in the city of Madison in need of additional traction since the main plowing operations concluded around 7am Sunday morning. Crews will continue applying sand throughout the day on Sunday while also working on serving areas in need of additional plowing to be sure the snow is pushed all the way back to the curb. Additional crews will be coming on at midnight to continue this work, and perform the alternate side parking plow backs.

When temperatures are below 15 degrees, the Streets Division cannot apply salt and will only use sand to give additional traction. Temperatures are predicted to remain below this threshold until Tuesday, December 20. When temperatures rise above 15, crews will begin applying salt to the salt routes, which are the major thoroughfares of Madison, Madison Metro bus routes, and roads around schools and hospitals. Roadway users should anticipate that these salt routes may be snow covered until the temperatures rise above 15 degrees and the salt application begins to work.

And finally, since the snow emergency continues tonight, try to remove your cars from the street tonight, or follow alternate side parking rules if you must park on the street. This applies to everyone in the city of Madison, including the isthmus snow emergency zone. If you must park on the street tonight, park on the ODD house numbered side of the street (so your car will be on the odd side between the hours of 1am and 7am on 12/19).

Streets Division staff will continue to monitor road conditions and future updates will be sent if conditions merit.
