Snow Plowing Updates
by Chris Kelley, Streets Superintendent
posted January 9, 2017 1:16 PM
Snow is again predicted to fall this afternoon, and that could impact the evening commute. All roadway users should anticipate some slippery spots on the way home today, so everyone is reminded to keep making good winter driving choices. Drive slow, exercise patience, and allow for extra stopping distance. The Streets Division will have 32 crews out to maintain the salt routes throughout the afternoon, into the evening, and also during overnight hours.

Prior to the snow event this afternoon, crews were out brining the most critical thoroughfares of Madison - roads such as East Washington Ave and Mineral Point Rd. Pre-treating roads with the saltwater brine this way prevents the snow from binding to the pavement, which allows crews to scrape the roads cleaner and means we have to spread less salt later.

These most critical thoroughfares that were pre-treated, plus Madison Metro bus routes, and roads and schools and hospitals that are not pre-treated make up the network streets we call "salt routes." A majority of Madisonians live within 3 to 5 blocks of a salt route, and these are the only streets in Madison that receive a treatment of salt. These important commuting thoroughfares will be maintained throughout today's snow event. Since crews will be treating all of the salt routes through the overnight hours as well, the Tuesday morning commute should be minimally impacted by this afternoon's storm.

Tuesday morning commuters should still plan for needing extra travel time and stopping distance because slick spots could develop, especially in residential areas that will not receive any salt. This is especially true if the freezing rain that is currently in the forecast for Tuesday morning arrives as predicted. Please stay alert, cautious, and patient on the roads.

Streets Division staff will be reviewing road conditions throughout the event, and future updates will be provided if conditions warrant.
