Fire Department Training - you may notice trucks in your neighborhood

March 8, 2016 4:24 PM

To all:
The Madison Fire Department (MFD) will be conducting an Apparatus Engineer (AE) Promotional process in the Spring of 2016.  The purpose of this communication is to inform you of this process and how it may affect you, your constituents and perhaps, your workload.

On Tuesday April 5th, AE candidates will take a written examination. Those that pass will then be eligible to participate in the second phase, an "Over the Road" driving examination. Candidates will be practicing driving with MFD aerial ladders between April 5th and the start of the Over the Road examination on Monday May 2nd thru Friday May 6th. Therefore, constituents may see our Aerial ladders more visibly throughout the City.

This exam takes the place of our cone course that took place at the Dane County Coliseum parking lot for many years. The Over the Road examination will take place on various streets in District 3 and District 16.  The exam will be proctored by Madison Metro supervisors and training staff, Fire Department Chief Officers and Human Resources.

We don't anticipate this examination being disruptive to residents or local businesses as the apparatus will drive through streets during daytime hours as they normally would for fire inspections or from calls for service (not at emergency speeds). During practice and the examination, candidates will observe all of the posted speed limits and state and local laws.

We feel this practical examination will result in stronger candidates that will serve the community well.  The MFD will work directly with neighborhood residents, building managers, the Streets department and others so that we are compliant with any rules or ordinances.

Again, thank you for your assistance in this promotional process. We appreciate your support.  If you have questions or would like further information about the process, please contact me via email or call me at 608-225-9771. I will follow up with this communication in the next few weeks.

Respectfully submitted,

Division Chief Johnny Winston Jr.
Organization and Community Liaison
