BIOGRAPHY
Alderperson Michael Schumacher represents District 18 on the City’s northside. He was elected to the Madison Common Council on April 3, 2007.
Schumacher was born and raised in Germany. He moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1979 and received a BA in Political Science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1984. In 1987 he obtained his Masters in Public Administration from The American University, Washington, DC. He and his wife Mary moved to Madison in 1993. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison earning a Ph.D. in Educational Administration in 1997.
Alderperson Schumacher is the owner of Solaris Management LLC and an adjunct faculty member in the Business Department at Edgewood College. His professional experience includes providing organization and leadership development to businesses, establishing and operating senior housing, and outsourcing management and administrative services for not-for-profits. During his tenure on the Common Council Alderperson Michael Schumacher has worked on the following initiatives involving his district and the city:
- Advocated for an increase in City payment to the Greater Madison Convention and Visitors Bureau to promote economic development through increased destination marketing.
- Supported the funding for 30 additional police officers after responding to constituent concerns over crime by organizing a neighborhood meeting attended by 250 residents and top city officials including Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and Police Chief Noble Wray.
- Strengthened bartender license policies in response to inappropriate judgment by some city bartenders that contributed to dangerous drunkenness and decreased quality of life for citizens.
- Delivered a resolution to address lake levels in area lakes, calling for collaboration by adjoining municipalities, Dane County, and the Department of Natural Resources to reduce flooding incidents that damage resident homes and destroy marshes.
- Worked with City CDBG and Habitat for Humanity in redeveloping 5.8 acres of land off Northport Drive as a gateway for mixed income housing in the Northport and Kennedy neighborhoods.
