Ridgecrest Shooting

May 31, 2017 5:08 PM

For those of you who aren't aware, there was a fatal shooting in the 500 block of Northport Dr. at the Ridgecrest apartments yesterday afternoon. In the wake of this homicide, Northside residents, Madison Police, social workers and other community leaders have been working together to solve the crime and support the family and others who were traumatized by the event.

In a meeting at the North District station, MPD Detective Lt. Joey Skenadore told me that multiple law enforcement jurisdictions are working together to locate the perpetrators, and Ridgecrest staff and residents have been very cooperative in their investigation. Lt. Skenadore said this was not a random shooting, and that they have not found any credible evidence that there is any ongoing threat to others.

Several students at Mendota Elementary School witnessed the shooting and the emergency response to it. MMSD staff have been providing support to these students throughout the course of the day today, and have invited trauma counselors from the Rainbow Project to meet with students tomorrow.

Earlier this year the City of Madison was awarded a youth violence prevention grant through the US Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). The program is called, "Madison's Northside: a Safe and Thriving Community." The Northside Planning Council (NPC) is in the final stages of hiring Neighborhood Navigators for this program. These Neighborhood Navigators will work to weave a tighter net of relationships between residents, civic groups, neighborhood centers, nonprofits and service providers with the goal of enhancing family stability and strengthening community.

This afternoon I met with MPD officers, concerned residents, a Joining Forces for Families social worker, staff from the Mayor's office and NPC staff to plan for a community meeting that will be held next Wednesday at 6pm. The meeting will be facilitated by NPC staff and the new Neighborhood Navigators. I'll send more information when location details have been confirmed.

The meeting will be an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns, share their feelings and contribute ideas about how to create safer communities for all. City staff, MPD officers, Dane County DA staff and other community resource people will be in attendance to answer questions.

We Northsiders are fortunate to have a long history of neighbors supporting neighbors and vibrant civic, religious, and other grassroots community organizations. Now is the time for us to combine our efforts in support of those who have been affected by this traumatic violence, and to create stronger relationships with each other moving forward.
