Snow Plowing Updates Posted Jan 24 2017 9:57 AM

Following is the latest from our Streets Superintendent.  Please do be safe out there.  I know we have hard working city streets crews and other city staff out there to try to keep our roads and bus stops and bike paths safe.  Please help out by keeping your sidewalks safe and if you are able, please help with bus stop pads on your block and sidewalk ends so all can get through these challenging times safely!

Snow Plowing Updates
by Chris Kelley, Streets Superintendent
posted January 24, 2017 9:57 AM

Break's over, Madison. Winter has returned. Tonight's storm should begin in the late afternoon with a rain/snow mix with the potential for sleet. This will likely impact the evening commute - so take it slow on your way home. Forecasts are calling for the weather to toggle between rain, sleet, and snow throughout the night as well, which could make parts of the morning commute on Wednesday slippery.

The Streets Division will keep 32 crews on the salt routes through the evening rush hour and into the evening. A deployment of 32 crews will come on at midnight to relieve the crews that worked through the evening rush and continue working the salt routes there the overnight hours to keep them open and ready for the Wednesday morning commute. As a reminder, the salt routes are the only streets in Madison that receive a salt treatment and they are the major thoroughfares of Madison, Madison Metro bus routes, and roads around schools and hospitals. Because of our focus on these main routes, residential areas may develop some slick areas during the evening tonight and these areas could remain slick by Wednesday morning.

Air and pavement temperatures are hovering close to freezing, which makes it difficult to predict what kind of precipitation we will get, and difficult to predict how roads will react to the weather. All roadway users should therefore make the good choice of erring on the side of caution and plan for extra travel time tonight and for tomorrow's morning commute. Be slow, be patient, and be ready to brake early. Slippery patches could easily develop in these conditions, especially if we receive rain then temperatures drop and these areas of wet pavement freeze.

And finally, some predictions for this storm are calling for over four inches of snow by the end of this event. Everyone is reminded that the Streets Division does not plow all residential streets until there are three or more inches of snow accumulated on the roads, and the storm is at or near its end.

Regardless of what the weather gives, the Streets Division will respond and work to keep the roads safe. Operations will adjust if necessary, and future updates will be provided.
