Be safe--Use the checklist of safety tips for the winter heating season from Madison Fire Dept.

October 23, 2013 8:38 AM

The following is a checklist of safety tips for the winter heating season.

1. Have your furnace inspected and serviced by a qualified professional prior to the heating season. (A furnace should be serviced at least once a year.)

2. Chimneys and vents should be cleaned and inspected by a qualified professional, and checked for creosote build-up. (Creosote build-up is the leading cause of chimney fires. This service needs to be done at least once a year.)

3. Wood for our fireplace or wood stove should be dry, seasoned wood.

4. The fireplace screen should be metal or heat-tempered glass, in good condition and secure in its position in front of the fireplace.

5. Use a covered metal (non-combustible) container to dispose of cooled ashes. (The ash container should be kept at least 10 feet from the home and any nearby buildings.)

6. Children should be taught to stay at least 3 feet away from the fireplace, wood/pellet stove, oil stove or other space heaters.

7. Use portable space heaters with an automatic shut-off.

8. Portable space heaters should be plugged directly into an outlet (not an extension cord) and placed at least three feet from anything that can burn; including bedding, paper, walls, and even people. (Place notes throughout your home to remind you to turn-off portable heaters when you leave a room or go to bed.)

9. Test smoke alarms every month to be sure they are working. (You need a smoke alarm on every level of the home, inside each bedroom and outside each sleeping area. For the best protection, the smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.)

10. Test carbon monoxide alarms and made sure they are working. (Wisconsin State Law requires carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home.)
