August 31, 2014 9:37 PM

The week of September 2 has items of possible interest to residents of district 2 at the Common Council - Discussion, Common Council, Long Range Planning Subcommittee (Parks), TIF Review Board and the Community Development Authority. The agenda items are open for testimony from the public should you be interested in weighing in.  I also appreciate hearing from you on any items on which you have a particularly interest or concern so please send me an email or give me a call.

Also, committees and commissions have an opportunity at the beginning of each agenda for Public Comment on items not on the agenda.  If you have something you want to share with a committee or commission, you can use the Public Comment time to do so.

Slacklining in Parks and on Public Property

DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION

You can find information about Slacklining here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slacklining

Slacklining is being done in many Madison city parks.  The Parks Commission has passed a prohibition of doing slacklining in Madison city parks, primarily because of a concern for damaging trees and injury to participants. The slackline (as opposed to tightrope which is more familiar to most people) is usually about 2 feet from the ground but can be higher.  A number of cities have put up poles to which the line can be attached.  I have been asked by some people who enjoy slacklining to encourage Parks to allow slacklining in parks either by putting up poles to use or by defining effective tree protections to be used (see article).  This sport is reputedly good for core strengthening, in addition to improving participants' balance.
