more updates after the longest night of the year

December 22, 2016 10:18 AM

Dear neighbors,

Last night was the longest night of the year. Thanks to the Winter Solstice, the northern hemisphere, including little District 3, had more hours and minutes of darkness than at any evening this year.

On a night with more darkness than any other we also learned of the fatal shooting of a friend right here in our area. At around 6:45pm an assailant shot two health care workers at a group home for cognitively challenged adults. One of the employees lost her life at the scene, and another was critically wounded. Truly there was more darkness on the east side last night than on almost any other night of this year.

As the daylight hours now begin to lengthen, we have some positive news if such it can be called in the immediate aftermath of something so senseless. The employee who was critically wounded had emergency surgery at University Hospital and is in stable condition this morning. We now know that the shooter was an outside party and he was almost immediately apprehended by Madison Police. Our police officers responded quickly and effectively and there was and is no threat to the public

We also know that this was not a hate crime targeting the differently abled. Students of history know that at points in human history certain individuals and groups have targeted differently abled children and adults. It was a shock to my system to have to even ask our high ranking police officers if there was a possibility of a hate crime here, but in the America in which we currently live, it was unfortunately a question I needed to ask.

I want to respect where we're at as neighbors and I don't want to spend too much time trying to find the positives when our feelings about this are still so raw. As you process through this, please keep the victims' families in your thoughts. I cannot imagine what they are going through right now, and to suffer a tragedy so close to the holidays on top of everything is almost beyond words.

Hopefully as the days lengthen we will find ways to heal our neighborhood and sense of peace.

I will continue to be in touch with you as I learn more. In the meantime, please hold together as always

Your alder,
Amanda Hall
