Thanksgiving Events, Greetings, and Tips

November 21, 2017 7:40 PM

Hi Neighbors,

Brrrr! I write you on this windy chilly evening to share some news, ideas, and tips for this holiday week.

Please join our neighbors to the south for the 8th Annual Elvehjem Neighborhood Turkey Trot this Thanksgiving morning. Our neighbors are hosting a 2 mile walk and a 5k (3.1 mile) run/walk. Thanksgiving morning races are just the best. I've done extensive research over the years in running various turkey trots versus staying in bed and I can share without reserve that the Thanksgiving meal *always* tastes better after a race. In fact, I'll be out there this Thursday, so if you see someone running like a turtle on 3 legs, well, that's me. Hope to see you there!

Of course after Thanksgiving comes an almost frightening amount of shopping for many. As you shop sales, please keep our local shops in mind. Misty Mountain Games in the Rolling Meadows Shopping Center has new ownership and is expanding its offerings, including lots of family board games. I was there the other evening and noticed that there were a few dozen teenagers playing Dungeon and Dragons (a tabletop game), and I was pretty thrilled to see a great safe space for kids to be in our neighborhood. By the way, if you ever wanted to learn how to play Dungeons and Dragons, there is an intro to D&D night every Thursday (except this coming Thursday, obviously). This Friday the shop is demonstrating a bunch of newer board games too, so you can find a new game for your family or friends to enjoy together. If you want to stick to the classics for family games, you can find those there as well-plus you're supporting a local neighborhood business. Whether at Misty Mountain Games or other shops in Rolling Meadows Shopping Center or around Madison, shop local this season.

Finally a safety reminder that as you rush home with your treasures, keep your vehicles and homes locked. Do not leave pricey gifts in your cars or trunks. Many stores offer some of their best deals online only so if you will be shopping online keep these tips in mind. With some alertness, your shopping can stay merry and bright.

I hope that you all have a holiday weekend full of good cheer and great food!

Happy Thanksgiving all,

Amanda Hall
