It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, please be safe in the snow

December 24, 2017 11:06 AM

Hi all,

Merry Christmas Eve and Happy Holidays

Those who wanted a white Christmas are getting their wish just in time and for all who are traveling today, we'll need to make it a slower and more cautious trip.

HUGE Thanks to our streets department staff who are being pulled from family holiday activities to plow and salt and keep us safe. We applaud and appreciate your dedication and send you our very best.

For the latest streets updates you'll want to follow @MadisonWinter on Twitter. In the meantime, I'm happy to share the latest info that I have: creatures were stirring, except for Streets Division snow plow operators!

Thirty-three plow drivers sprang from their beds to fight the new-fallen snow. Crews are maintaining the city's salt routes and sand first areas to assist everyone making their way through the city with their sleighs full of toys.  As a reminder, salt routes are the main thoroughfares of Madison, Madison Metro bus routes, and other vital streets. These are the only streets that will receive salt. Sand first areas are hills, curves, and intersections that will receive sand to assist with traction.
Crews will continue working on these the roads throughout the course of the storm.  Streets Division staff will keep monitoring conditions as well, and future updates will be provided if operations change.
With weather like this, it's best not to travel as quick as a flash.  Slippery spots may develop throughout Madison, especially in residential areas. Be sure to allow extra stopping distance and extra travel time. Everyone should be patient, slow, and cautious today on their way through the city in order to arrive at their destinations safely.  As with all snowy days, we at the Streets Division exclaim, "make good choices" to all so we all can have a good night.

Please join me in raising a glass of egg nog to our dedicated streets staff.

Stay safe on the roads, east side, and have a lovely holiday
