McGinnis Park, Milwaukee Street Bridge, and Proposed Apartment Complex

Happy Summer Neighbors!

I have a few updates and reminders to share with you all this evening

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, neighbors in the Rolling Meadows Neighborhood Association have taken great initiative in plans to make McGinnis Park more usable, accessible, and beautiful. For one of their park projects they've partnered with city parks to get a few loads of mulch brought in and, weather permitting, this should be dropped off tomorrow (Monday). Stay tuned for news of a neighborhood volunteer day to move mulch around to plant beds and so forth. If you can loan time or tools or both, I'm sure the group would be grateful.

East of the interstate, we're looking at a timeframe extension on the Milwaukee Street bridge project. The new estimated completion date is June 29th. I imagine the intense rain has had something to do with the extension so let's all cross our fingers for enough rain to keep the gardens happy but not too much to get our bridge back. Also with regards to Milwaukee Street, special note to Reston Heights neighbors: as you are traveling eastbound on Milwaukee past Sprecher there is a lone orange cone in the middle of the right lane. It looks like it was just forgotten there, but it's marking a large divot in the asphalt; you'll want to stay clear of it.

Finally, let's recap our public meeting and other public input regarding the proposed apartment building at the Rodefeld site near the corner of Cottage Grove and Sprecher Roads. Thanks to everyone who came out for the meeting. The 2 hours we spent learning about and discussing the proposal centered around a few main ideas-

-The apartment building would complement a future proposal for commercial uses right at the corner of Cottage Grove and Sprecher Roads. The additional residents from the proposed apartment building would help our neighborhood draw those potential commercial partners such as a convenience store, a bank, or other uses.

-Plans to move Sprecher Road to the south and make it 2 lanes each direction between Cottage Grove Rd and Hwy AB are not currently a high city priority. The new Sprecher Road could easily be 5 years out, if not longer. We discussed whether we wanted to push for this to move forward faster; those neighbors present voted not to push on this at this time. If you were not present and you have thoughts on this, please hit reply and weigh in.

-The proposed apartment building would be pet-friendly market rate apartments with some underground parking, and amenities such as a dog play area. To build it, and to potentially build commercial buildings on adjacent parts of the property would require changes in how the parts of the parcel are zoned.

We had a robust discussion as a neighborhood. At times in the discussion, words got a bit testy. After the meeting I had some folks who attended the meeting write me and say that they had no problem with or even were in favor of the proposal, but they had felt uncomfortable saying so during the meeting due to other attitudes and strong voices present. I want to gently remind us as a community that we can do a better job making space for everyone's voices. I know that national leadership and the current state of the country don't always provide the best examples for us, but we are neighbors and we can stay civil and fair-minded toward one another.

I received word late last week that the development company is going to wait until the comprehensive plan has been finalized to move forward on this project; it's on hold for right now.
