Flooding Updates as river and lake levels ramp up

August 23, 2018 2:10 PM

Hi Neighbors,

While Monday's rain did not impact District 3 too much compared to our neighbors across the city, our hearts are with those who experienced loss and destruction during the flash flooding.

The second part of any heavy rain event is rising river and lake levels. As water drains to the established water basins, low lying areas of Madison are under direct threat of flooding.

As of right now, E. Johnson St is closed. This afternoon/evening part or all of East Washington Ave will close near the Yahara River, and traffic will re-route via Willy Street. Please download an extra podcast or crank the tunes and settle in because it could be a long commute. But please, let's stay patient with one another, we're all in this situation together.

Follow @madisontraffic on Twitter for up to the moment info.

In the meantime, do not enter flooded out areas, either in your vehicle or on foot. While the threat of flash floods is well past, nobody can be sure exactly how the ground has shifted under standing water. What looks like a puddle could be a sinkhole, and it's best to just stay away from the whole business.

There is a need for more hands to help with sandbagging in various areas, including the Yahara area at East Main Street. If you can, come lend a hand. Not all of our neighbors in the impacted flooding areas are up for the physicality required to load and haul sandbags, and we can always use more helping hands pitching in.

I'll keep this blog, as well as my alder facebook page updated with volunteer needs as I become aware of them. We're tough and hard-working east siders and I know we're ready to help where we're needed.

stay safe and hang together
