Upcoming Community Events of all different types

June 4, 2015 6:07 PM

Hey neighbors, it's another beautiful week in Madison!

With the school year almost over it's a great time to tell you about some awesome upcoming events here in our beautiful city.

First and foremost, let's talk about biking. This Sunday 6/7 is Ride the Drive. This is pretty interesting event in which cyclists of all ability levels bike on the nice boulevards in downtown Madison and along the lake. If you haven't participated before, I would encourage it; it's a great event.

With an event like this one, Madisonians tend to fall into one of two categories: those who participate in Ride the Drive and have a lot of fun at a great community event, and those who forget that it's happening until the day of and are inconvenienced by all the road closures. In service to the latter group, here's a blurb about the road closures so you can plan around them:

The six-mile route will be closed to vehicular traffic and includes portions the Capital Square, State Street, Gilman Street, Frances Street, Dayton Street, Bedford Street, N. Shore Drive, John Nolen Drive, Blair Street, and the outbound lanes of E. Washington Avenue. Traffic will be allowed to cross the route at several key intersections under direction of police.

Streets will be closed from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7th.

Next up, Concerts on the Rooftop are back this summer, including concerts tonight 6/4, Friday 6/19, and Friday 6/26. Tonight's band is a cover band called the Rabid Aardvarks. No, I didn't make that up.

Then, beginning Friday 6/19 and continuing every Friday through August 14th, from 10am-12noon it's Kids Day at Philosophers' Grove (the area at the top of State St), featuring lots of games and activities for kids and families. More info here

On a more civically-oriented note, Madison Police Chief Koval will be near our area this month doing his quarterly listening sessions. Here are the closest ones to us here in District 3:

Thursday, June 18: 6pm at the United Way (2059 Atwood Avenue)
Monday, June 22: 6pm at Hawthorne Library (2707 E. Washington Ave)
Tuesday, June 30: 6pm at Vera Court Community Center (614 Vera Court)

More info and a full schedule for the Chief's listening sessions are here

If your home is in the Rolling Meadows Neighborhood, please join us at the neighborhood association meeting this month:

Meet our neighborhood's new liaison officer!

Officer Thai Xiong of the East District 'sCommunity Policing Team will be joining us at our next RMNA meeting to update the community & listen to our questions or concerns.

Please join us next Thursday (June 11th) to hear the latest news from the East District Police Station and to share any questions or concerns you have with Officer Xiong.

The June RMNA meeting will be held:

Thursday, June 11th
New Beginnings Alliance Church
602 Acewood Blvd

Finally, if you are someone who prides yourself on getting all your groceries from the car to your kitchen in one trip (I know I do, unless I've been to Costco, then it's sometimes impossible), you'll be interested in this one-this Saturday is Madison's 16th Annual Strongman Competition. We'll be competing at Olbrich Park from 10am-3pm, and I say 'we' because yes, your alder will be competing. So if you're interested in seeing what a Strongman Competition is all about, and/or you have a young daughter and want to show her how girls can be super strong too, come on down. I'll be lifting logs over my head and flipping 300lb tractor tires around, and I'd love to see you there!

Here's also a link to the city's calendar of community events.

No matter how you engage with this great city, I look forward to seeing you at a future event or community gathering soon!

Yours sincerely,

Amanda M-M Hall
