East Fire Station Update

September 9, 2012 2:31 PM

Neighbors gathered to talk with the design team, Zimmerman, and Madison Fire Department leaders earlier this month to discuss the look and operations of the proposed fire station to be located in District 3, on Town Center Dr., near I90 and Sprecher Rd.

Key dates for the review process are
Sept. 19 for the Urban Design Commission
Nov. 5 for the Plan Commission, and then
Nov. 13 for the Common Council (this is the start of budget deliberations so may be chnaged.)

The 30-some people who joined the meeting were pleased with the design as is the Fire Department. I do not anticipate any issues with its approval, especially since funding for construction ($5,284,904) in 2013 is included in the Mayor's proposed budget. This is excellent news and means we will have service that meets the response time in 2013 or very early 2014.

The new station witll start with fire fighters sufficient to staff one fire engine, although the building is built to house more vehicles and staff as it grows.

There will be no ambulance at this station as of now, but the most important thing about response is getting a trained responder to the site of an emergency to start care - which will happen with our trained fire fighter staff on the truck. Ambulances for transport will still come from Stations 5 (on Cottage Grove Rd.) or the station on Lien Road.
