Compete to improve your neighborhood with the City's Neighborhood Grant Program

January 6, 2013 2:45 PM

The City of Madison loves its neighborhoods, and supports them in so many ways - from neighborhood plans made with residents to providing training and information to neighborhood associations, and the Neighborhood Grant Program, which offers grants to take your ideas and put them into reality. In District 3, the grants have been used for neighborhood signs, gardens, trail education in the conservancy, and art-in-the-park installments. This year, particular attention will be paid to proposals that focus on placemaking.

Placemaking can help neighbors get to know each other better, while bringing activity and beauty to public spaces. According to Project for Public Spaces (www.pps.org) any great place itself needs to offer at least 10 things to do or 10 reasons to be there. These could include a place to sit, playgrounds to enjoy, art to touch, music to hear, food to eat, history to experience, and people to meet.

15 Extra Points! 2013 grant proposals may earn up to 15 extra points for placemaking proposals. Perhaps you would like to start up a series of 3 or more events and activities at a particular neighborhood location during the year.  Think about events and activities that will attract neighbors from all the age groups, ethnicities and cultures represented in your neighborhood.

Please consider using existing places and events in your neighborhood - the Capitol View Farmers' Market could be a ready-made partner.

Join the Neighborhoods Staff for the Grant Workshop on Thursday, January 10, from 6 to 7:30 pm to learn details at the Madison Municipal Building (the old one) at:
215 Martin Luther King, JR Boulevard
Room LL-130 (Lower Level)

(I know some of us will be at Kennedy School's Safety Meeting, so maybe divide and conquer?)

Application Steps
1st Step:  Contact Linda Horvath, lhorvath@cityofmadison.com or 608-267-1131 to discuss the eligibility of your proposal. A Pre-Application meeting is mandatory and must be scheduled between January 7 and February 11.

2nd Step:  Attend the Grant Workshop on January 10 at the Madison Municipal Building, 215 Martin Luther King JR Boulevard, Room LL-130, from 6-7:30pm. The grant guidelines and application will be distributed at the workshop and posted on the City's webpage. (http://www.cityofmadison.com/neighborhoods/grantprogram.htm)

Please let me know if you submitting so I can provide a letter of support, too.

3rd Step:  Complete your application and deliver/postmarked no later than February 18, 2013 at 4:30pm.

This is one of the budget lines that is always at risk of reduction and removal, so please take advantage of it this year - we never know if we can get it back next year!
