evening update on yesterday evening's fatal shooting

February 3, 2016 6:18 PM

Neighbors, I am relieved to share with you this evening that the sole suspect in yesterday evening's fatal shooting has been apprehended and is in custody. Prior to his apprehension, the suspect fired on police but no officers were hit and everyone is safe at this hour.

MPD worked intelligently and tirelessly to bring this suspect in and I know that we are all breathing a tremendous sigh of relief this evening knowing that the suspect has been apprehended.

All the same, we must now walk the long road of healing from this violent act so close to home. Metro Market, where both the deceased and the suspect had been employed, is akin to a piazza in our area, a place where we are likely to run into our neighbors, friends, and our children's teachers. Several dozen of our district's high school students and young adults work there and knew the deceased well. Many of us have interacted with both the deceased and the suspect while shopping. Naturally we are all deeply unsettled and upset by this tragic event.

Grief counselors have been available at La Follette High School for students today as well as at Metro Market for employees. We are also hosting an information and processing session tomorrow evening at 6pm in the Kennedy Elementary School library. I hope to see you there.

In this strong and closely-connected community, we are hit harder by an event like this one but we are also uniquely able to come together to heal.

Thank you for being a strong community and for sticking together
