Horses! ...and firefighters, and a Kwik Trip Update

April 7, 2016 8:30 PM

Hi there neighhhhh-bors,

On behalf of Madison Police Department Mounted Patrol I am pleased to invite you to the mounted patrol open house on Sunday May 1st. (I am also pleased to share hilarious pun jokes at every possible opportunity). The event is free all day and is located at the facility at which MPDMP boards their horses, Horse First Farm at 5594 Alpine Rd, Brooklyn, WI 53521. While it's a bit of a drive from here on the east side it is so worth it. Here's a link to a recent article on the important work of our mounted patrol, (besides involving draft horses, which makes them obviously awesome, excuse my bias).

Speaking of events involving civil servants, our fire department will be running examinations for promotion applicants here in our district May 2nd-5th between 8am-5pm. These will be overroad tests for firefighters who are applying to for the Apparatus Engineer promotion (the guy or gal who can drive the fire engine). If you see a fire engine suddenly pull up down the street absent a fire or any signs of distress, it's likely one of these exams taking place. Please stay respectful and keep distance and let the firefighters who are taking their exams have the space to succeed.

Kwik Trip Update

Thank you all for engaging in the discussion process for the Kwik Trip proposal. As you've heard me say before, the process of considering a development proposal can get neighbors talking and create a better sense of community in our neighborhood.

Thank you also for individually chiming in with your thoughts with me. I kept careful tally of the yeas, nays, yeas with conditions, and nays unlesses, and brought those numbers and thoughts with me to share with the Urban Design Commission last night. Ultimately, the commission felt that no gas station, even one as admittedly nice-looking as Kwik Trip, could meet the aesthetic requirements for which the commission was looking for the site, nor could a one story building such as KT likely fit with other neighborhood structures. As such, the commission voted to refer the proposal to the Plan Commission with a recommendation against the proposal.

What happens next?

Next the proposal will go to the plan commission on Monday April 18th. The commission will consider the UDC's recommendation, along with zoning, use, and other factors, and will either render a decision or refer it.

I know this news is disappointing to many of you as there are significantly more neighbors in favor of this proposal than against, taking into account communications directly to me, comments and feedback at neighborhood meetings, and ambient info (hardly the most scientific stats, but they don't really let alders conduct official polling). If you are still committed to this project and want to impact future decisions at the city level, it is important to attend the plan commission meeting next Monday.

Thanks again to everyone for staying involved as we decide what works for our neighborhood.

Have a great rest of your week and stay warm,

Cordially yours,
Amanda Hall
