Video of Arrest made outside East Towne Mall this evening

June 21, 2016 9:27 PM

If you haven't already seen it, a video of a two MPD officers arresting a young black woman outside East Towne Mall at approximately 7pm this evening will soon be coming up on your radar. I have viewed the video multiple times and spoken with our east district captain about it.

I will not link to the video here at this time.

The content and gravity of this video is such that in the coming hours and days it is almost certain that rhetoric in our community will be heated. Some will likely level accusations based on the tremendous force the officers employed, including punching, kneeing, and tasing a suspect who was already on the ground and subdued. Others will likely blame the young woman for her misdeeds and behavior. Emotions will be high and it will be so so easy to make snap judgments about not only the facts of this incident but about our neighbors advocating for one perspective or another.

I urge us then, to do our our utmost not to reach for hate and prejudice but for patience and understanding. Everyone who watches the video will experience it differently because each of us has walked a different path in this life. My neighbor's experience and perspective is just as valid as my own. If we are to hold together as a community and heal everyone hurt by this incident, and moreover, tackle what this video suggests about our community's greater challenges, we must come from a place of respect and brotherhood.

Let's hold together, east siders

Your alder,
Amanda Hall
